Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill into law last week that could have a huge impact on the state's LGBT community. The law went into effect immediately and allows therapists and counselors to refuse to treat patients if they feel that doing so would interfere with their religious beliefs. The supporters of the law say that it only offers protections for mental health professionals that have already been extended to other types of medical care providers, since doctors have the right to refer patients to another physician if they feel that helping a patient would violate their personal beliefs. However, many are criticizing the bill another of the many anti-LGBT laws sweeping the southern United States.
