"This month we here at the Division for Social Policy and Development of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs will be focusing our outreach efforts on raising awareness on the importance of employment and decent work in achieving shared prosperity and dignity for all.
Goal number 8 of the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals calls for “full and productive employment and decent work for all!”
Unfortunately, according to the International Labour Organization, more that 200 million people around the world are currently unemployed. There are also still more that 20 million people worldwide with salaries lower than $2 per day.
Generating productive employment was and still is the most effective means of reducing poverty and promoting social integration.
Our societies will not be fully empowered, nor inclusive and equitable without a fully and decently employed population.
The post-2015 development agenda set a very ambitious goal. Let us work together to achieve it!
