Quantum computing is an exciting new technology that promises to
accelerate the solution of some problems beyond our wildest imagination.
In this talk, I start from the ground up and explain what quantum computation is, and what it is not. This leads to a discussion of why now is the right time to be thinking about this new technology and some of the recent developments that have been made, laying the groundwork for the future of this computing model. I then argue that some of the first applications of this technology will be in the discovery of new materials and chemistry, and describe recent research efforts in this regard.
These include implementations of new algorithms on real quantum devices.
