With revelations that HSBC met George Osborne more than any other bank after the election of the coalition, questions will surely be asked over what they wanted from him. His predecessor Gordon Brown was happy to give the banks the ‘light touch’ regulations they wanted, and Ed Miliband was happy to endorse his relaxation of the rules governing links between government and business. And it’s not just governments where HSBC threw their financial weight around. If Peter Oborne’s accusations about the Telegraph pandering to HSBC for fear of losing advertising are revenue are true, it seems they could be buying off the media as well.
