Last September, Sallie Mae launched the "Bridging The Dream" scholarship where guidance counselors across the country were asked to nominate junior and senior high school students who were hard working, had an interesting story to tell, and had a skill they felt was special. Kayla, from Brewster, NY was selected as one of the four finalists for this scholarship.
Some people might give up when their life is turned upside down. But not Kayla. Even after losing everything in a house fire, she drew on her dedication and determination to keep going. In particular, her passion for dance — jazz, tap, ballet, point, contemporary, and hip hop — helped her move on with her life.
After seeing the work of medical personnel first-hand, Kayla’s dream is to be a physical therapist. Knowing that her family lacks the finances to help pay for college, Kayla’s continued with a positive attitude that wins over everyone she meets. “I look at those years as strengthening and maturing and readying me … teaching me how to remain optimistic in times of difficulty.” She hopes that winning the “Bridging the Dream” Scholarship will help her move ahead to college so she can change the world.
