TRANSCRIPT (since the closed captions are a little wonky - we'll try to get that straightened out ASAP):
Greetings, witches, wizards, Muggles, and magical creatures! I'm Flourish Klink, and I'm the Minister of Magic - con organizer - for Ascendio 2012. I've decided to start making videos on the theory that they're more fun than blog posts. So.
Number 1, what is Ascendio? Ascendio is a Harry Potter fan convention grafted onto an academic conference. And it all takes place inside the Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Studios Orlando. We start off with over 100 hours of academic programming, which is fans, academics, aca-fans talking about both the Harry Potter books and also about the Harry Potter fandom. That's lectures, that's discussions, that's round tables, that's even crafting sessions.
And then we add on a generous helping of people in robes and hats, meeting friends they see once or twice a year, and taking part in meetups by interest, grabbing meals together, discussing what they love, they hate, they wish they could know about the world of Harry Potter.
And then, the International Quidditch Association flies in, running Quidditch games for players of all skill levels. There's a gallery of fanart, a common room where people can draw/write/read/hang out, plenty of vendors selling everything that you could possibly want, and we've got a huge chunk of time set aside for wizard rock, and we've got at least two full-length fan musical [theater] performances...
...and as if that weren't enough, we get to do it by a very special theme park that we all know and love! Basically, it's a total blast.
Number two: How do I get involved?
Well, you can register for the con! So, that's pretty obvious, right? But you should do it sooner rather than later, because the closer we get to the con, the more the price goes up.
Number two, you can volunteer. We are an entirely unpaid-volunteer-run organization; we are a nonprofit, so your registration goes just to cover expenses, and basically we're always looking for more people to help us make this thing happen. So no matter what your talents are, we can use them. We can find a job for you, I promise! So email email@example.com in order to make that happen.
Number three, you can submit formal programming, or submit your art to the art gallery, or audition for our musical numbers. Basically, I'm gonna do more video blogging about those, because they're kinda large topics. But you can find out more on our website, and go ahead and take part in that.
And that's it! OK. Farewell, and I hope to see you in Orlando in 2012!
